Interior decoration tips and ideas – Determine your style

How do you want your space to feel? Here is a trick to help you perfect your style: take a look at your closet. Do you prefer custom pieces or do you prefer loose and more comfortable items? Do you gravitate towards certain colors or patterns? Another way to help you determine your style is to think of keywords that define how you want a space to feel. Traditional, formal, elegant? Playful, humorous, cozy? Monochromatic, aerodynamic, modern?

Take note of design inspirations in all facets of life. Designers often use the answers to these customer questions as a starting point when they are hired to help them design the interior of their homes. Remember a hotel where you have stayed or a restaurant where you had dinner that you especially liked.

Interior decoration tips and ideas – It’s good to know what you like but also find out what you don’t like

It is much easier for people to express what they don’t like. By putting dislikes in the equation, we can eliminate some things and limit ourselves to others. For example, a large-scale bold print may remind you of something in your childhood that you don’t want to see in your own space. Or a chair with a backrest can bring bad memories. Similarly, a certain color can evoke feelings of a past design trend that you aren’t eager to repeat. These memories and reactions are very personal and individual, but they also define our tastes.

Interior decoration tips and ideas – Build around your space

Space planning, which impacts the scale, is essential. People often use furniture that is too large or too small for space. Build your design around the furniture for which you really have space. Think about the balance of a space. For larger rooms, consider establishing zones for different activities: a rest area that is helpful to a conversation; another area to watch television; a work area with a desk or table for projects or games.

Even if you love symmetry, you can make things feel too artificial when you do everything symmetrical. Think of visual weight and distribution to balance a space. Proportion and scale are key to any design.

Interior decorating tips and ideas – Take it seriously when it comes to painting

Paint selection is one of the most important and profitable decisions you can make. The right paint options harmoniously connect the spaces. Consider the house as a whole. You risk creating disjointed rooms if you paint one room and within three months the other. Consider how colors affect our mood. Some colors make people feel happy, calm or even agitated. There are many interiors in which the most common combination of a bold black is used to contrast with crisp white walls.

Take the samples of the actual paint colors for your walls when looking at the options. Observe them placed on the wall with natural light, morning and night light. Often, a reference color that works well in one room won’t work in the other. What might work at your friend’s house may not work in your house.

Samples in the paint shop are a useful starting point, but what looks good on paper may not translate inside. With white paints, try a handful of different shades on the wall and pay special attention to the nuances. They can have hints of pink, blue or yellow. The outside environment strongly affects the temperature of the light. Vegetation and sky can create reflections of greens and blues on the interior walls.

Mix high and low price decoration

The most expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better (be it art, furniture or dogs). Consider an artist or designer “unknown” and buy according to your form, comfort and how the art of furniture works for you and your needs. The humblest objects can have more soul and be the most beautiful of a room. Do not be afraid to mix furniture and decoration of high and low prices. Not everything must be expensive to be important. Otherwise, you should choose something you really like.

Start from scratch

The design can be overwhelming. People often want to know exactly where to start. For any room, designers generally suggest that you start from scratch: decide on the floor covering. It doesn’t matter if you want or have wood floors, carpets, tiles, stone or wall-to-wall carpets. Thinking first about your floor will determine how other pieces are placed in the space. If you select a neutral tone or natural fiber without much pattern or color, you have more options with colors or upholstery.

If you start with an old carpet, you can draw carpet colors to formulate a color palette. It is important to plan these things together, otherwise, it will end with the circus effect: too many things without the whole space running in unison. Starting with a sofa or upholstered chairs limits your style immediately.

There is more flexibility with something like an area rug with dozens or even hundreds of possibilities. This is where you have options and then you can start layering pieces. It is a much easier approach to make the final decision to cover the floor first, and then apply layers.

Choose the lighting carefully

Large interiors have a variety of layered lights that can be individually controlled for different times of the day, events or moods. Most rooms require three types of lighting: general, accent and homework. Ambient or general lighting illuminates a room in a fairly uniform manner. Accent lighting is used to emphasize the characteristics of a room, such as art and decorative objects.

Task lighting has to do with directional and adjustable light sources: think of reading lights and study lamps. Try to illuminate most of your room with a variety of lights and lamps, preferably all equipped with dimmers. And please, enough of low lights!

Make good use of the samples

A pot of sample, cut, brushed, catalog. Samples are a very useful tool: at the beginning of a project, they represent possible options, a collection of ideas that are worth considering. The sample also becomes a reference for many other materials. As the project develops, the samples represent a record of selections. Always try to keep TWO samples: one is a “work sample” used to refer to color and texture as the project develops.

The other sample must remain in the master file. This sample will allow you to access the most important code and color numbers when you need it.
