Type of wall
Here is a handy step-by-step guide to help you create an accent wall. The dry stone walls do not need mortar. The mortar walls hold the stones together. A third type of wall is built to look like dry stone but uses mortar where it can not be seen.
The dimensions of the wall must be calculated so that the wall fits into an area without dominating it. The base of the wall must be wider than the top to give strength and stability to the wall.
Try whatever material you choose, try to find fairly regular stone thickness. This will make controlling the level of the wall much easier. Using material that can be easily moved is a good idea.
If you use mortar, mix it with a firm consistency, in a wheelbarrow to protect your lawn.
Use 2 sticks or iron stakes that are at least 12 inches longer than the desired height of the wall. Insert them into the floor at the extreme corners of the front of the wall. Make sure they are firmly upright. Tie a piece of string horizontally between the 2 stakes. The rope should be at the level of the top of the first layer of stones. As each layer is completed, check the level by moving the line to the top of the next layer.
Add the first layer of stones
The first course of stones will define the dimensions of the base. Try using stones that have a similar thickness. Place a palette full of mortar on the surface of the shoes and press the first stone into it. Make sure the stone is level. For the ends of the wall, select stones that are as square as possible. Using a guideline to ensure straightness, do the same with other stones until you have the base covered.
Each layer should be placed so that it is a little narrower than the bottom layer. This will reduce the wall to the top and add strength. Use the rope to keep each layer straight. After the first layer, use only enough mortar to create a joint. A stone wall looks much better without thick mortar lines. Use smaller stones to keep the line horizontal.
The final layer will be the stones of the lid. These will preferably be the total width of the wall and on a regular basis. They can be the same as the stones on the wall or a contrasting material. Slate or marble are excellent protection stones and offer a pleasant surface to sit on.
Finish the wall using the mortar to order the joints on the wall. Once the mortar is dry, the wall will be safe and will last for many years. If you have not used mortar, the wall will remain solid, but you may be susceptible to the stones being forced out by frost. Check the wall every spring.
